Two pieces of Jenny Mastin’s sculptural ceramics are included in the Artspace Artist Association’s “New Works” juried exhibition in Raleigh, NC through February 26, 2001. Both “Oracle” and “Mandrillus Sphinx” (shown above & already sold!) made an impression on juror Melissa Peden. Jenny’s inner vision reflects her knowledge of and interest in global cultures. “Each creation I design may be based on a cultural myth, folklore, legend … My objective with each piece is to exhibit a contemporary interpretation and visual narrative of primal creations.” Find Jenny & her work in #9 CURVE studios & garden, the home of Constance Williams Gallery & Studios.

“Primal” art forms have influenced the imaginations and the works of artists throughout the centuries. They have likewise held my fascination since childhood. Each form, whether a totem, mask, shield, body art or figurine, was created as a means of connecting the physical and spiritual worlds; a way of creating a sacred communion or dialogue between the seen and unseen.
Each creation I design is based on cultural myth, folklore or legend to convey my own personal narrative. My works are hand built, sculptural, low-fired clay forms. The surfaces may be impressed and/or incised with a compilation of textures, patterns and symbols to convey a story. Color is incorporated predominantly through the application of underglazes, oxide stains, and colored slips. Metal, hemp, raffia, and other materials may be added to elaborate and exaggerate the forms. My objective with each piece is to exhibit a contemporary interpretation and visual narrative of primal creations.
